Vietnamese Physician Association of Northern California (VPANC)

Background & History
The association was founded in 1987 when a provisional executive committee was formed to draft the rules and bylaws of a new association. In 1989, the association filed its Articles of Incorporation with the California Secretary of State under the name Vietnamese Physician Association of Northern California (VPANC). It has been a non-profit organization.
VPANC attracts approximately 300 physician members from a variety of specialties and practice backgrounds. The membership is widely distributed geographically, from Visalia and Yuba City to the Bay Area and Fresno. The majority of physician members have practiced in the San Jose area.
Mission
The association's primary goals are to promote friendship and professionalism among its members and to contribute to the development of the Vietnamese American community through professional activities.
Organizational Infrastructure
According to the Bylaws, the Executive Committee of VPANC consists of five member physicians elected to a two-year term. The five positions of the Executive Committee are: President, Vice-President of Internal Affairs, Vice-President of External Affairs, General Secretary, and Treasurer. There are five committees at present: education and community services, membership and public relations, scholarship, communication and publication, and advisory.
Membership benefits include quarterly continuing medical education dinner meetings, monthly e-Newsletters, e-announcements, social and professional networking with one another and with other associations
Activities
Since its inception in 1989, VPANC has been hosting educational events for physicians and allied medical professionals in the community. Social gatherings such as the annual picnic and the New Year celebration were organized.
The association has also established a community outreach program that includes numerous health fairs, weekly radio and TV talk shows on health topics.
All activities aimed to provide people with general knowledge about common health issues, to raise awareness on and promote early screening for cancer and other diseases. All of these programs are community-oriented and culturally sensitive. Vietnamese is the primary language used for all these programs.
In addition, the association has administered an annual scholarship award program for high school students. It is the oldest program that seeks to encourage future generations of leaders for the Vietnamese American community.
